Marketing Cloud Account Engagement

Account Engagement Consulting for B2B Teams Who Need Sales to Agree

Marketing Cloud Account Engagement — the product most people still call Pardot — is Salesforce's B2B marketing automation platform: Engagement Studio programs, prospect scoring and grading, connected campaigns and native CRM sync. Twopir Consulting implements and repairs it so that marketing and sales share one definition of a qualified lead, rather than two that quietly disagree.

Which Product

Account Engagement or Marketing Cloud Engagement? They Are Different Products

The shared brand name causes real confusion and occasionally real expense. These are two different products for two different motions, and the choice should be made on how your business sells rather than on which name is more familiar.

The Work

Four Engagements That Start Most Conversations

Almost every Account Engagement conversation begins in one of these four places. The second is the most common by a wide margin, and the first is the one that would have prevented it.

Engagement 01

Implementation and CRM sync design

A new Account Engagement build, designed around how your business actually sells. The sync design is the decision that matters most and the one most often left at default — it determines which system owns which field, and therefore which system is right when they disagree.

  • Business unit and folder structure that will still make sense at scale
  • Salesforce connector configuration and sync behavior by object
  • Field ownership: which system is authoritative for what
  • Prospect lifecycle and status model agreed with sales
  • Forms, landing pages and progressive profiling
  • Connected campaigns for attribution that reaches the pipeline
Engagement 02

Rescue: inherited or underperforming orgs

The most common engagement. An org set up years ago by someone who has left, with scoring nobody trusts, automations nobody can explain, and a sync that fights the CRM. We start with a structured audit rather than a rebuild.

  • Full asset and configuration inventory
  • Scoring and grading model review against actual outcomes
  • Automation rule and Engagement Studio program inventory
  • Sync conflict analysis and field ownership remediation
  • Data quality, duplicates and prospect hygiene
  • A prioritized remediation plan with commercial impact attached
Engagement 03

Scoring and grading sales will actually use

Account Engagement separates scoring — behavior, how interested they are — from grading — fit, whether we want them. Most orgs collapse the two into one number, which is exactly why sales stops trusting it.

  • Scoring model built on behaviors that correlate with real outcomes
  • Grading model built on fit criteria sales recognizes
  • Thresholds agreed jointly, with sales in the room
  • Score decay, so a spike in March does not qualify someone in July
  • Validated against closed-won history rather than against intuition
  • A review cadence, because the model drifts as the business changes
Engagement 04

Nurture and Engagement Studio design

B2B nurture is paced to a human sales cycle rather than to a consumer purchase. The hard part is not building the program — it is deciding what should happen when a prospect goes quiet, and what sales sees at the moment they stop being quiet.

  • Engagement Studio programs mapped to real buying stages
  • Content mapped to stage and to persona, with the gaps named
  • Pacing appropriate to a considered purchase
  • Behavioral triggers that pull a prospect forward or pause them
  • Sales alerting that is specific enough to act on
  • Suppression: prospects in an active sales conversation stop being nurtured
The Handoff

Why Sales Ignores Your Marketing Qualified Leads

Almost every B2B marketing automation problem presented to us as a platform problem is a handoff problem. The platform is doing precisely what it was configured to do; the configuration encodes a definition of "qualified" that sales never agreed to.

The symptoms are consistent: leads are passed, sales does not work them, marketing reports MQLs, sales reports that the MQLs are poor, and both are telling the truth about different things.

Four causes, all fixable without changing platform.

Scoring and grading were collapsed into one number

Account Engagement deliberately separates behavior from fit. A student downloading everything on the site scores highly and grades poorly; a perfect-fit buyer who read one page grades highly and scores poorly. Collapsed into a single number, both look identical to sales — and after a handful of wasted calls, sales concludes the number means nothing.

The threshold was set by marketing alone

A qualification threshold sales did not help set is a threshold sales has no reason to respect. The fix is a working session, not a better model: agree what qualifies, agree what sales commits to doing with it, and write both down. The model is the easy half.

The score never decays

Someone researched intensively in March and has done nothing since. Without decay they still carry a qualifying score in July, so sales receives a lead whose interest expired a quarter ago. A few of those and the whole feed is discounted — which also discards the genuinely current ones.

The alert does not say why

A notification that a prospect is now qualified, with no indication of what they did, tells a salesperson nothing they can open a conversation with. The alert that gets acted on names the behavior: what they looked at, when, and how many times.

The Roadmap Question

No, and Here Is What Is Actually Happening

This is the most asked and most badly answered question in B2B Salesforce marketing, and the anxiety is understandable given how many times the product has been renamed.

The current position, from Salesforce: Account Engagement customers on Growth, Plus, Advanced and Premium editions can access Marketing Cloud Next capabilities in supported regions — with no migration. Next layers alongside what you already run rather than replacing it.

What that means in practice, and what it does not.

The product is not being switched off — Account Engagement continues as the B2B product, with its editions and its native CRM relationship intact. The rename from Pardot changed the branding and the packaging, not the platform underneath your programs.

New capability arrives without a migration — MCAE customers on the current editions get access to Marketing Cloud Next functionality — Agentforce Campaigns, multichannel journeys with email and SMS, advanced personalization features such as cross-object merge fields — while keeping the campaigns, assets and engagement programs already built.

Adoption still needs planning, even without migration — No migration does not mean no work. Which capabilities to enable, in what order, what has to be true in your data first, and how consent is managed between the platforms are all real decisions. That is a readiness engagement, and it is a fraction of the cost of the migration nobody needs.

Be sceptical of anyone quoting you a migration — If a partner is proposing a migration off Account Engagement to access Next capabilities, ask them to point at the Salesforce documentation requiring one. More on this on the Marketing Cloud Next and Agentforce page.

When to Look

Signs Your Account Engagement Org Needs Attention

Three of these are a scoring and handoff problem, and two are a configuration problem. Both categories are common in orgs that have been running for more than a couple of years without a review.

Sales does not work the leads marketing passes, and both teams have privately concluded the other is the problem.
Nobody can explain how the scoring model works, and it has not been validated against closed-won outcomes since it was built.
The Salesforce sync produces conflicts or duplicates, and somebody resolves them manually each week.
Engagement Studio programs are still running for campaigns that ended, because nobody is certain what turning them off would affect.
You cannot say which campaigns influenced pipeline last quarter without building the analysis by hand.
Common Questions

Questions About Account Engagement

Yes. Marketing Cloud Account Engagement is the current name for the product launched as Pardot. The rename changed branding and packaging; the platform, the prospect model and the native Salesforce relationship are the same lineage.

Most practitioners still say Pardot, most internal documentation still says Pardot, and a great deal of search still says Pardot. We use whichever name you use.

No. Account Engagement continues as the B2B product, and customers on Growth, Plus, Advanced and Premium editions can access Marketing Cloud Next capabilities in supported regions with no migration — Next layers alongside existing campaigns, assets and engagement programs rather than replacing them.

The anxiety is understandable after several renames, but the practical position is that your programs keep running and new capability becomes available to them. If someone is quoting you a migration to get it, ask which documentation requires one.

It follows from how you sell. If individual leads are worked by salespeople over weeks or months, and marketing's job is to hand over qualified people, that is Account Engagement — the prospect model, the native CRM sync and the scoring and grading split all exist for that motion.

If you message consumers at volume, react to transactional events, and no salesperson is involved in the purchase, that is Marketing Cloud Engagement. Some businesses legitimately run both; what causes trouble is running both without a clear boundary about who lives where.

Scoring measures behavior — how engaged this prospect is, based on what they have done. Grading measures fit — how well they match who you want to sell to, based on attributes like industry, size and role.

They are separate on purpose, because a highly engaged poor-fit prospect and a perfect-fit prospect who has barely engaged are very different situations that would be indistinguishable in one number. Collapsing them is the most common cause of sales losing confidence in marketing qualified leads.

MCAE customers on the current editions can access Marketing Cloud Next capabilities including multichannel journeys with email and SMS, in supported regions. So the answer is increasingly yes, without changing product.

What has to come first is the consent design — per channel, per market. Adding a channel technically is straightforward; adding it to your consent model is the actual project. More on that on the SMS and WhatsApp page.

With an audit. Inherited B2B orgs accumulate a specific set of problems — scoring nobody validated, automation rules whose author has left, sync conflicts resolved manually each week, Engagement Studio programs still running for campaigns that ended.

The audit establishes what exists, what still runs and what is safe to retire, then sequences the remediation. In most inherited orgs a meaningful share of the assets turn out to be dormant, and switching those off is the fastest available improvement.
